This is a relatively easy adventure starting from the centre of Drumnadrochit. I started by walking out of the village past a playing field where a shinty match was underway. My route turned off into the Craigmonie and Balmacaan Woods where there is an impressive collection of trees – giant redwoods planted in the nineteenth century as well as native oak, beech and birch. There were also some good viewpoints over the village of Milton below but sadly I didn’t spot any pine martens (rarely seen) or red squirrels (more realistically possible).

My path climbed further and I reached the top of Craigmonie Crag .

There are good views here over Loch Ness. It’s also the site of an Iron Age hillfort.

The route continued, eventually reaching a minor road next to the River Coilte. I walked uphill and took a path through some more woods to reach the Divach Falls. Unfortunately they weren’t quite as spectacular as I had hoped, given all the recent wet weather. However the cascade is an impressive thirty metres.

All that was left was to return to my start point in Drumnadrochit, where the shinty match was still being keenly fought.
