17 May 2013: 22km. Started 09:35. Arrived 16:30.
My departure time was dictated by the time of my lift to the spot where I had been picked up the evening before. I shared the transport with a couple who were walking on drove roads to Skye (with baggage transfer).
It was sunny and dry all day. If only it had been like this on the West Highland Way…. The paths and tracks were easy to follow although they were a bit more undulating than I had expected. I enjoyed good views back towards the Nevis range.
My propensity to meet people close to people I know continued. I met a couple walking the Great Glen Way as their holiday. They told me that they were from Worcestershire and as I have lived in Worcestershire for 13-14 years I asked them where. They named the village and told me they were sure I would never have heard of it – so I responded – “Do you know X who was my trainer when I was a trainee GP? That’s where she lived.” It turned out that she was their next door neighbour!
I couldn’t pass the floating barge café on South Laggan loch without being tempted. The couple from the bed and breakfast had also stopped there.

The Youth Hostel
The youth hostel was self catering only. I met a sports masseur – Jenny – and we went to the pub together for a meal. She noticed my limp and offered a complimentary massage, but I declined just in case it aggravated the problem. It was a pleasant evening walking out and smelling the coconut scented gorse in the evening air. She was diverting off north the next day to go over the north west Highlands and tried to persuade me to change my mind and walk with her. She was going to Cape Wrath area eventually but some of the way would have been the same. However I stuck to my plan especially as I would have needed to have bought more dehydrated food packs in Fort William to sustain me on that journey in remote areas with no shops.
