Day 49 Traquair to Peebles

2 May 2013: 17km. Started 09:45. Arrived 15:00.

Fortunately the dog had survived the night. I only had a short walk so I was unperturbed about not leaving until almost 10am. I walked past the impressive bear gates that I had already seen the previous day.

In order to get off the road, I took a forest track. After a while, it bore little relation to the tracks shown on my map. I ended up turning off and walking between the trees. Eventually I left the forest and was on an impressive old drove road. it followed the ridge and descended gradually to Peebles where I crossed the picturesque bridge over the River Tweed.

I booked in early to my guest house, allowing some time without carrying my rucksack to explore the historic ruins of the Cross Kirk, note the link with author John Buchan and enjoy coffee and cake at the Old Court House. Once more, I discovered that this is somewhere that merits more than a fleeting overnight stay.
