30 April 2013: 33km. Started 09:00. Arrived 18:30.
The forecast was sunny without much of the wind that had been a constant feature for so long. I opted for a leisurely walk, although it turned out that the walk was two miles (3km) further than I had expected.

I wandered along a minor road back on to St Cuthbert’s Way and then followed a scenic path along side the River Tweed and over an exciting bouncy suspension foot bridge. The path continued through a country estate and fields. I met a couple walking towards me and chatted about motives for walking. They were a nurse and an NSPCC worker enjoying some peaceful bird watching. It’s refreshing having these random meetings with such pleasant people all enjoying the natural environment. Sadly there were some poorly controlled dogs not on leads, despite the notices. I walked past St Cuthbert’s Church (one of many) and sat on a bench nearby to eat lunch. The footpath subsequently returned to the River Tweed and round expansive meanders past a golf course.

Towards the end of the day, the dominant view was of the impressive distinctive triple-peaked Eildon Hill. By the time I climbed over the hill and down to Melrose, I was feeling very fatigued. No doubt the effort of completing the Pennine Way a couple of days earlier was still making my legs tired. However the conditions now were entirely different with bright warm sun and very little wind.

I stayed in the Old Bank House where the owner was concerned when he showed me the twin bedroom that I should only sleep in one bed. Oddly a previous guest had tried out all the beds and so all the sheets needed to be washed despite single occupancy. Very odd – must have thought they were Goldilocks!
I was already finding the Scottish borders area fascinating with its scenic countryside and significant history. I decided I would need to return to the area and spend more time exploring. I eventually booked a week with my husband for June 2020 alongside a second week on the Isle of Mull but unfortunately due to Covid-19 that is postponed.
